Innovation to be unveiled at Fruit Logistica

Fruit Logistica's Spotlight articles cover new and improved products, machinery and processes, systems and techniques, technologies, services, promotions and exhibitor campaigns to be presented at the fair.

An edible coating that extends the shelf life of melons (Decco), a pocket scanner providing the Brix value of a fruit sample (Sunforest), and a polytunnel with automated and permanent ventilation (Voen) are among the global debuts lined up for Fruit Logistica 2016, being held February 3-5 in Berlin.

Also slated to appear make their worldwide premieres are a new line of Pausa Pranzo salads with dressings, self-propelled harvesters for leafy vegetables (Ortomec), and two new attractive and tasty tomato varieties – Goutine (Hazera Seeds) and Belmonte F1 (Southern Seed).

These are among the innovations covered on the Fruit Logistica website in its Spotlight articles. The series provides an overview of new and improved products, machinery and processes, systems and techniques, technologies, services, promotions and exhibitor campaigns to be presented at the fair. The next deadline for submissions is November 30.

Logistics Hub to make its debut at Fruit Logistica 2016

Supply chains are becoming longer and more complicated, sometimes spanning several continents. The right choice of logistic services can determine whether or not a fresh produce consignment can be sold.

Logistics Hub is a new three-day series of events focused on fresh produce handling and logistics that will be held at Fruit Logistica, February 3-5 2016.

According to a press release by the event organisers, the sessions will address ten current issues relating to the logistics chain. It is where “producers, exporters and traders will find the information they need to help them take the right logistic decisions when it comes to transporting their goods.”

Alex von Stempel, an independent consultant in fresh produce logistics has designed and organised Logistics Hub and will moderate the event, to be held in the CityCube Berlin, Hall B, Stand C-04.

Session topics include:

  • Strategic Cold Chain Investments and examining new Outsourcing Potential
  • Reefer Claims: Addressing a Classic Clash of Interests
  • Focusing on the First Mile: Country and Produce Case Study Africa
  • Focusing on the First Mile: Country and Produce Case Study Latin America

Egypt the Fruit Logistica 2016 partner country

Egypt first exhibited at FRUIT LOGISTICA in 1999. The Egyptian exhibition presence is organised by the Egypt Expo & Convention Authority (EECA).

Egypt has been named as the official partner country for Fruit Logistica 2016, taking place February 3-5 in Berlin.

Event organisers said in a press release that the North African country will focus on demonstrating its potential and presenting its high-quality products to win over trade visitors.

Messe Berlin CEO Dr. Christian Göke: “The history of agriculture in Egypt dates back more than 5,000 years – no other country in the world can look back on such a wealth of experience. Today, Egypt plays a significant role in the global fresh produce industry with substantial fruit and vegetable exports to 145 countries.”

Egypt exported USD 2 billion worth of fresh produce in the 2013/2014 season, primarily to Russia, Saudi Arabia and Great Britain. Iraq, the UAE, Libya, Italy, the Netherlands and Kuwait are also important customers. Export volumes rose from 1.7 million tons in 2005/2006 to 2.9 million tons in  2013/2014, a 69% increase.

In the 2013/2014 season, Egypt’s main exports included citrus fruits (1,142,000 tons), potatoes (688,000 tons), onions (359,000 tons), grapes (99,000 tons), pomegranates (85,000 tons), strawberries (34,000 tons) and green beans (31,000 tonn).

Israel’s Aurora Seedless Papaya wins Fruit Logistica 2015 Innovation Award

Trade visitors at last week’s Fruit Logistica fair in Berlin chose the “Aurora Seedless Papaya” as winner of the Fruit Logistica 2015 Innovation Award (FLIA). It was selected out of a field of 10 finalists, all of which were on display at the event.

 

From Aviv Flowers Packing House Ltd. in Israel, “Aurora Seedless Papaya” has a delicate fragrance and firm, full-flavoured pulp. The product of natural selection and crossing, its target markets include the EU,, Switzerland and Canada.

 

 

The second place FLIA winner was the “Lemoncherry” tomato.



Developed by BelOrta, a growers’ cooperative based in Belgium, this yellow, sweet-tasting cherry vine tomato features a distinctive, lemony aroma.

Third place honours went to the “DIY Fresh Packs” produced by Bakker Barendrecht (part of the UNIVEG Group) in the Netherlands.

 

These products are designed for consumers who want to use fresh ingredients to prepare a full meal, soup or side dish for four people.

 

Fruit Logistica’s showcase of fresh product ideas

Fruit Logistica global brand manager Gérald Lamusse described the ten finalists for the award as “outstanding new fruit and vegetable industry products and services that are driving new trends in the international marketplace.”

The other finalists were :

  • “Eye-Catcher” – A product display system for crates at the POS, from Cabka Group GmbH, Germany;

  • “FC 15 Fruit Chunker” – A cutting machine for pineapple and melons, from Atlas Pacific Engineering, Inc., USA;

  • “Holzdekor-RPC” – Reusable plastic crates with a natural wood look from Polymer Logistics, Germany;

  • “Low Carbon rPETeCo” – Packaging material consisting of 90% recycled plastic bottles, from Holfeld Plastics Ltd, Ireland;

  • “Portable Nondestructive Fruit Quality Meter” – A portable quality-control measuring device, from Sunforest Co. Ltd., South Korea;

  • “Regal’in™ Apple” – A new apple variety, from Regal’in Europe, France;

  • “UP-8000” – A peeling machine for carrots, cucumbers, white radishes and other long vegetables, from Hepro GmbH, Germany.

Lamusse said the award is “the industry’s most coveted distinction” and attracts huge international media attention.

Fruit Logistica 2015 sets new visitor record

About 65,000 trade visitors – up from from 62,000 last year – attended Fruit Logistica 2015 in Berlin, setting a new attendance record for the annual event.

Held February 4–6, the fair featured 2,785 exhibitors from 83 countries, compared to last year’s more than 2,600 exhibitors from 84 countries. They presented information to trade visitors from about 130 countries, compared to 141 in 2014.

According to organisers, both exhibitors and visitors praised the complete market overview of the fresh produce industry the event provided and its excellent opportunities to make contact with wholesalers, retailers, fruit and vegetable growers, importers and exporters. The 2015 edition cemented Fruit Logistica’s role “as the world’s leading trade fair for the fresh produce industry.”

Messe Berlin GmbH CEO Christian Göke said that “in addition to its undisputed position as a business platform, this year’s Fruit Logistica strengthened its leading role as a platform for innovation for the international fresh produce trade.”

Products on show included fresh, unprocessed fruit and vegetables; dried fruit; nuts; herbs and spices; organic products and flowers.

Suppliers of products and services for packaging, storage, transport, warehousing and product presentation also exhibited.
