World banana exports down 7.5% in 2022
Global exports of bananas fell by 7.5% during the first 10 months of 2022, compared to the previous year, with volumes shipped between January to October 2022 totalling 292.01 m boxes, compared to 315.7 m in the same period of the previous year, according to AEBE data. The top three markets are the European Union (26.32%), Russia (22.97%) and the Middle East (15.74%). There were in exports from Africa (-36.32%), the US (-14.06%) and Oceania (-12.51%).
Guayaquil in Ecuador is the leading port for banana shipments, accounting for 64.85% of the total, followed by Puerto Bolívar (23.62%) and Posorja (11.53%). The top three brands by volume were Dole (10.40%), Bonita (3.78%) and Favorita (3.63%).
The top 5 exporting companies are UBESA (8.33%), Reybanpac (6.77%), Noboa Trading (4.50%), Comrsur (3.80%) and Agzulase (3.72 %), together exporting 79.17 million boxes (27.11% of Ecuadorian banana exports).
The top 5 shipping companies are MSC (26.16%), Maersk (20.70%), UNIREFEER (12.55%), CMA CGM (9.59%) and Hapag Lloyd (9.45%), together transporting around 229.08 million boxes (78.45% of the total).
