Uber to enter grocery-delivery market
Uber is to move into the on-demand grocery delivery sector, with the take-over of Chile-based Cornershop. Cornershop is an online grocery provider operating in Chile, Mexico, Peru and Canada. The acquisition, which is set to go through in 2020, is still subject to approval. Walmart Canada has only recently announced it will be expanding its partnership with Cornershop from five to 14 stores in Toronto.
Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, said,
“We’re excited to partner with the team at Cornershop to scale their vision, and look forward to working with them to bring grocery delivery to millions of consumers on the Uber platform.”
Oskar Hjertonsson, founder and CEO of Cornershop, said,
“In 2015 we started Cornershop with primarily the Latin American market in mind and we couldn’t be more excited to work with Uber to help us take that mission much further.”
