The Third Mercabarna Run: a feast of surprises to mark 50 years of Barcelona’s central market
On Sunday 8th October, Mercabarna will once again throw open its doors to the people of the city to celebrate the third edition of the run which will cross through its interior. This year’s event, which will feature a professional run, a fun run and a solidarity run, is expected to attract 4,000 people, including 2,000 runners and their friends and families. Over 30 sporting and educational activities are planned with plenty of surprises in store to celebrate the landmark event of the market’s 50th anniversary as well as to combat food waste.
One of the reasons for the success of the Mercabarna Run is the delicious range of “Solidarity Food” on offer: 15,000 sardines, 3,000 sausages and 2,000 kg of fruit for all in attendance to share. The runners will be given a bag filled with 8 kg of fresh food supplied by the Mercabarna wholesalers, including fruits, meats and vegetables as well as surprise gifts to mark this year’s event, such as healthy recipes. This year’s novelty is the unveiling of a 2-metre, 5-tier cake to feed the 4,000 attendees created by renowned pastry chef Christian Escribà.
