Spain’s organic sector well-poised to cope

Mon 08/08/2022 by Richard Wilkinson

Spain’s organic food market grew by 8.86% Y-O-Y in 2021 to €2.75 billion, with per capita consumption up by 9.71%, according to Ecovalia. However, increased costs from inputs, which are pricier for organics, are putting pressure on this growth and the profitability of the sector.

But Diego Granado, general secretary of Ecovalia, argues that the organic sector has certain advantages that can protect it from the current adverse economic climate. “The use of adapted varieties, biological control methods and non-dependence on chemical fertilisers can partly cushion the effects of inflation,” he said.
