Peruvian blueberries have gained access to the highly lucrative Indian market for the first time. The news comes on the back of a very successful 2020-2021 campaign for Peru’s exporters, when 94,000 tons of blueberries were exported, mainly to the US (57%), by the Netherlands (23%) and China (11%). With the addition of the Indian market, the 2021-2022 season is expected to see over 230,000 tons exported, according to the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and Tourism (Promperú).
Peru’s largest blueberry production region area La Libertad has 7,580 hectares of the biloxi, ventura, rocío, and emerald varieties, among others. The main producing areas are the provinces of Virú, Trujillo, Chepén and Ascope.
