Peruvian avocado finding new markets
Chile has become a key market for Peruvian avocado exports, with volume rocketing by 91% in the first 6 months of this year and value rising by 62%. Chile has now overtaken the US as an importer of Peruvian avocado, with shipments to the US dropping by 62% in volume and 51% in value during the same period, due to increased supply from Mexico and California.
Peru shipped a total of 467,359 tons of avocados worth US$835m in the six months to June 2023, which represents an increase of 39% in volume and 57% in value compared with the same period last year. A lack of rain has affected Spanish avocado production, increasing reliance on Peruvian imports to meet growing local demand.
Total avocado exports from Peru are forecast to remain stable at around 630,000 tons in 2023.
