Peru and Hong Kong enter negotiations for signing an FTA
Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Luis Fernando Helguero, announced last week that Peru and Hong Kong have begun the first round of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This round included thirteen negotiating tables focusing on issues related to market access, rules of origin, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, trade in services, electronic commerce, investment, cooperation, trade facilitation, and temporary entry of entrepreneurs, among others.
“The negotiation of an FTA with Hong Kong and its future signing will allow us to export our products to that destination without tariffs, which would provide Peruvian exporters with greater certainty, predictability and advantages. Hong Kong is the third largest destination for our non-traditional exports in Asia, so this FTA will give new impetus to our shipments,” the minister said.
Peruvian exports to Hong Kong totalled US$262 million in 2022. The main agro-industrial products exported are grapes, blueberries, avocados, tangerines, pecans, pomegranates, figs, and tangelos.
