Lidl France combats food waste

Since 2016, Lidl has marketed 3-5kg boxes of fruit and vegetables that are close to their expiration date, as well as pastries from the previous day or fading flowers. About €14 million boxes have been sold in this time, with half of the revenues channelled to the “Restos du Cœur” social restaurants, worth €7 million between 2016 and 2020. According to the chain, this initiative has prevented about 70,000 tons of waste from fruit, vegetables, pastries, flowers and plants. The price deductions are clearly marked with colour stickers on the relevant products.
