La Unión, a leader in the agri-food sector, to calculate its water footprint for fourth consecutive year
The Union shows its commitment to responsible water management and environmental protection on World Water Day, announcing some of the results of its water footprint for the 2020/2021 campaign, and communicating that it has already begun to calculate the water footprint of the 2021/2022 campaign.
The water footprint is an indicator that measures the amount of water used to produce goods and services, and its reduction is essential to preserve water, a scarce and vital resource for the planet. La Unión has worked constantly to reduce its water footprint, and the results obtained are a sign of the success of its sustainability policies.
Committed to water efficiency
La Unión, in collaboration with a consultant specialised in sustainability and climate change, Ecoterrae, has been calculating the water footprint of one of its star products, cucumber, since 2018, reducing this indicator by 37%. In the 2020/2021 campaign, the company decided to take a further step towards achieving its sustainability goals by expanding the water footprint study to the entire organisation, with this indicator equaling 11.44 m3/ton marketed. In addition, this study establishes a reduction plan that will continue to reduce the water footprint of the entire organisation, which is undoubtedly a very important milestone, and demonstrates the company’s commitment to responsible water management and its commitment to sustainability.
Among the measures adopted by the company to reduce its water footprint are the optimisation of irrigation in its crops through intelligent irrigation systems, the efficient use of water in its production processes and the implementation of water reuse systems. These actions, combined with the measures also established in its carbon footprint study for the same campaigns, will help reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and electricity, and, therefore, reduce the organisation’s indirect water footprint and contribute to looking after water and the planet
“At La Unión we are convinced that responsible water management is essential for the sustainable development of the planet. For this reason, we are proud to have reduced our water footprint and continue working every day to be more efficient in the use of water and more respectful of the environment,” said Javier Carmona, Director of Marketing, Communication and CSR.
