Satsuma mandarins from Peru have been welcomed to the shelves of several supermarkets in Japan, with local supermarkets promoting their arrival as a “Homecoming from the Land of the Sun!”, in reference to the origins of satsumas and their connections to Japanese ancestors who supported the fruit’s cultivation in Peru.
Quality requirements are very high in Japan, resulting in strict control over additives and preservatives used to withstand long journeys. However, Japanese importers expressed satisfaction with the quality and safety of Peruvian mandarins, emphasising cooperation with Peruvian entrepreneurs throughout the process.
