India’s apple imports double in first nine months of year

Demand for fresh apples is soaring in India, driving a sharp increase in imports in the first nine months of the current fiscal year. Between April and December 2021, import volumes more than doubled from a year earlier and were also 14% higher than for the whole of 2020 when there were no Covid-related restrictions on the movement of goods.
Importers have turned to Iran and Turkey for the fruit, with volumes of Washington apples plummeting due to the 70% import duty they face and the soaring prices of ocean freight. During the April-December 2021 period, India imported 303,245 tons of fresh apples.
