The first shipment consisted mainly of Red Chief and Gala varieties, shipped from the Romanian port of Constanta to Mumbai and Chennai in around 40 days. The producers, FreshTime and Farm-Prod, have apple production and post-harvest handling processes certified GLOBALG.A.P. and GRASP.
Moldova’s apple industry is growing rapidly, as farmers turn to high-demand varieties such as Gala, Red Chief, Fuji, Bonita and Granny Smith. Moldova was ranked among the world’s top-ten apple exporters in 2021, with an average annual production of 550,000 tons and more than 225,000 tons exported. Last year, Moldovan apples were exported to 32 countries, up from 18 in 2021.
