FEDEMCO presents the Ecowoox® sustainable seal at the Global Tomato Congress
The Spanish federation of wooden lightweight packaging (FEDEMCO) participated at the tomato industry event held in Rotterdam on Tuesday 16 May. Salvador Martínez, the federation’s secretary, presented to over 300 industry professionals the reasons why wooden packaging, also for the tomato category, is the most sustainable and responsible choice.
During his presentation, Martínez outlined the key points of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) published in November last year. The rule introduces the concept of “extended producer responsibility” which compels growers to ensure full recyclability and established recovery rates for their packaged goods. The norm harmonizes packaging policies among member states and imposes a 15% reduction in packaging waste by 2040.
“We want to keep offering value to the supply chain, especially during these times of changing working models,” Martínez added. To facilitate compliance with the regulation, FEDEMCO has promoted its own certification: Ecowoox®. The quality label enables packaging companies to certify complete recyclability, eco-design, and energy recovery for their wooden packaging. In this way, FEDEMCO supports the industry on its transition to a circular economy providing solutions that exceed the minimum requirements set by the legislation.
“With these measures, the new European regulation promotes sustainable packaging solutions. Natural, biodegradable, and recyclable materials with low carbon and water footprints are prioritized. In this sense, wooden packaging is the most sustainable packaging you can find. It ticks all the required boxes and exceeds the minimums established by the law”, explained Martínez
