EU’s orange exports worth €1.8 billion in 2016

The EU devotes 280,000 hectares to oranges, half of which is located in Spain. Last year, the EU exported over 2.7 million tons of oranges, worth €1.8 billion, with close to 90% (2.4 million tons) traded within the EU. Spain (1.6 million tons) accounted for 57% of the total EU orange exports), well ahead of Greece in second place, with 462,000 tons (17%).

The Member States which imported the largest quantities were the Netherlands (548,000 tons), France (506,000 tons) and Germany (490,000 tons). Around €585 million were imported from non-EU countries, mainly from South Africa (43%) and Egypt (28%), followed by Morocco (7%), Argentina (5%), Turkey (3%), Zimbabwe (3%), Uruguay (3%) and Brazil (2%).
