Chile’s 2021/22 citrus crop hit by frosts

Chile’s 2021/22 citrus crop was hit by winter frosts in the Valparaíso, Metropolitana and O’Higgins regions. According to FAS Santiago estimates, lemon production decreased by 30% to 140,000 tons in MY 2021/22, but will rebound to 200,000 tons in MY 2022/23, assuming normal yields. Likewise, in MY 2021/22, orange production decreased by 18% to 164,000 tons, but should increase by 22% to 200,000 tons in MY 2022/23 as production recovers. In MY 2022/23, mandarin production is projected to increase by 39.4% to 237,000 tons following an increase in area planted. FAS Santiago estimates that MY 2021/22 mandarin production (which includes mandarins, clementines and tangerines) will total 170,000 tons, a 26.1% drop from MY 2020/21.
