Spanish apple production up 3.2%, while pear volumes fall 7.1%

Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food has announced its forecasts for the 2018/19 apple and pear campaigns. According to Fepex data, apple volumes are expected to be up 3.2%, to 511,400 tons. This is 1.3% below the 5-year average. Meanwhile pear output is estimated to be down 7.1%, to 335,300 tons – 10.1% below the five-year average.

As for consumption, Spaniards consumed 9.4kg of apples per capita in 2017/18, a fall of 4% from the previous year and 8% less than the five-year average. In contrast, pear consumption rose by 5% in 2017/18 to 5.2kg per capita.

Spain’s apple exports climbed 2% in 2017/18 to 67,900 tons, while pear exports dropped 9% to 50,100 tons.
