Canadian apple production estimated to rise 14% in MY 2018/19

Canada’s apple crop in 2018/19 is expected to total 395,300 tons. This 14% increase in production is mainly due to better growing conditions in Ontario and British Columbia. Quebec and Nova Scotia faced adverse weather conditions that caused a slight dip in their apple production. FAS/Ottawa estimates that planted apple area increased 2%, as farmers continue to plant new varieties.  New trees entering maturity in recent years continue to add to production.

The US remains Canada’s largest supplier of apples, pears, and fresh table grapes, accounting for 80% of apple imports, and 50% of pear and grape imports.  The Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA) came into force between Canada and the EU on September 21, 2017, resulting in the elimination of tariffs for 98% of EU exports to Canada. The EU is currently the fourth largest supplier of fresh apple imports to Canada (2%), but this may increase.
