Smaller global tangerine crop forecast
The global tangerine/mandarin crop for 2022/23 is estimated down 900,000 tons to 36.9 million tons due to lower production in China and Morocco caused by unfavourable weather. According to the latest USDA report, the smaller crop is expected to drive down consumption. Exports are also estimated down, particularly from Morocco, where the drop is as high as a third.
Although China’s production is estimated down 2% to 26.5 million tons due to lower yields, exports are expected to rise. Consumption is down with the decrease in production and higher exports. Indonesia and Vietnam are expected to remain the top export markets for China’s fruit.
EU production is estimated down 4% to 3.0 million tons, with the higher production in Greece not sufficient to offset lower production in Spain, where weather conditions were unfavourable during the summer. Consumption is estimated lower in line with the reduced production. Imports are projected down while exports are expected to decrease with the reduced supplies. Morocco and South Africa are set to remain the leading overseas suppliers.
