Food waste down in Italy
Mon 13/02/2023 by Richard Wilkinson
Italians are wasting 12% less food than they were a year ago. This is the finding of The Italian Case 2023 survey by the Waste Watcher International Observatory on Food and Sustainability, released on the tenth National Food Waste Prevention Day, in collaboration with the Zero Spreco campaign by Last Minute Market and the University of Bologna. On average, Italians waste 75 grams of food per person per day for a total of 524.1 g per week. Fruit is the number-one source of waste (3.4 grams per day) followed by bread, salad, vegetables, garlic and onions. The total waste in Italian homes is worth €6.48 billion, while waste in the supply chain is worth around €9 billion.
