Delays to start of Andalusia’s tomato campaign drive prices upwards

Currently, the most expensive tomato types are the vine and ribbed varieties. The ribbed tomato reaches its optimum quality in the month of December and is popular around Christmas time. According to industry sources, supply volumes this year are much lower than those registered in Weeks 48 and 49 of last season – between 10-15% lower for the ribbed tomato and around 20-25% less for the vine tomato. However, volumes available in the auctions of tomato pear are higher than what was on offer in 2016/17. In terms of price, although last year’s campaign was considered a very positive one, the performance is even better this year for ribbed, long-life and vine varieties. In Weeks 48 and 49, the pear and smooth varieties registered very similar price levels in both campaigns.
