Kiwi producers across the world seek to raise production levels
France’s kiwi production has declined in recent years as the country’s orchards age, leaving demand outstripping domestic supply. This has prompted French kiwi growers to set up the AOPn Kiwi de France producer organisation, with the aim of increasing production and supporting the renewal of orchards. French consumers are very selective when it comes to buying kiwis, with high demand for quality labels such as Bio or Label Rouge.
China, a fast-growing market for kiwifruit, has also been ramping up domestic production. A popular variety in the country is the kiwi berry, also known as the soft jujube kiwi, which is native to China. The domestic season for this fruit begins in October, with quality levels looking good so far for the next campaign. As for imports, Zespri, a favourite among Chinese consumers, holds an 80% market share. Chilean exporters have experienced difficulties exporting their kiwi fruit to China this season due to the repeated lockdowns and market closures.
South Africa is another country seeking to raise production levels and carve out a stake in the lucrative global kiwi market, particularly during the export window to the Northern Hemisphere prior to the start of the New Zealand season. Although South Africa is not yet able to fully satisfy domestic consumption, the next four years are set to see significant growth in the country’s kiwi output, as new orchards enter maturity and acreage expands.
