Almost 30% of all crops produced in Spain’s Murcia region are organic, which now reaches 107,247 accredited hectares. This statistic was reported by the Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Environment and Emergencies, Antonio Luengo, during his visit to the International Fair of Organic Products BIOFACH, in the German city of Nuremberg.

“The figures keep us as the region with the highest percentage of agricultural land used for organic production and confirm the trend of recent years, thanks to an increase of more than 20 percent in organic production last year, in which 18,400 hectares were certified,” said Luengo.

While in 1996, the organic production area of the Region of Murcia was 284 hectares, in 2021 it exceeded 100,000 hectares, with the number of operators rising from 62 to 4,578 over the same period, with 19.5% more certified operators registered in 2021 alone.

Practically all crop groups have experienced growth in the last year, especially nuts (11,667 ha, +35%), grapes (2,043 ha, +16%) and citrus (1,213 ha, +31%).
