The Valencian Farmers’ Association (AVA-ASAJA) has expressed its concern at an EU ruling that declares it illegal to sell products at a loss. The Spanish government will therefore be obliged to stamp out the practice of selling goods at a lower price than that at which they were purchased. The president of AVA-ASAJA said that it would be tragic were farmers to be deprived of one of the few forms of protection remaining at their disposal and warned that it will lead to young people abandoning agriculture and the farming regions.

The sentence was passed by the Luxembourg Court of Justice in a case brought against the Murcia-based wholesaler Europamur Alimentación by the regional government of Murcia who accused the firm of selling produce at loss-making prices.
