Castang takes up environmental strategies
Production with respect for the environment; that is Castang’s intention. The French apple-producing company is adopting strategies so as not to harm the environment. In addition to over 25 years working in comprehensive production, Castang uses sexual confusion for pests on all of its lands. “We also have nests for birds and shelters for insects. We sow the apple tree orchards with grass so the ground is not covered and use grafts as little as possible”, explains their commercial director, Juan Ramón Merino.
Founded in 1994, Castang is an apple nursery and production company located in the south of France. It specialises in Red Chief, bi-coloured apples and Granny Smith off-season. Their 600 hectares of fruit-producing land and their 200-hectare nursery produced 30,000 tons in the last campaign. “For the next one, we intend to reach 40,000,” says Merino. Castang, the top European producer in planting Granny Smith, Fuji, Red Delicious and Redfield, aims to work with the European Granny variety in June, July, August and September. ”We have the capacity to preserve them. It’s a product that sells more in summer and the imported quality is inferior to ours,” Merino points out.
