Slowdown in growth of organic food consumption in Spain
Kantar studies show that growth has stalled in Spaniards’ consumption of organic food. This conclusion was presented at the 4th edition of the Mercabarna Summer University, held from July 4 to 6, and focused on sustainable food.
However, Spaniards are consuming more premium products. According to the studies presented by the director of the Kantar Worldpanel Food Area, Joan Riera, purchases of premium food products grew by 10% between 2015 and 2021. But, although 73.5% of Spanish consumers say they eat local food, there are also 69% who decide to buy kiwis imported from other countries because they are healthy and 40% buy private label products of unknown origin because they are cheaper.
Meanwhile, FAO economist Cindy Holleman explained that there are 3 billion people in the world who cannot afford a healthy diet, with the Covid-19 pandemic and the climate crisis further aggravating this problem.
