This year, Luce’s Melannurca PGI Campana apple season got off to a slightly late start. “But all of the characteristics that over time have made it a niche and quality product are there, which is why supermarkets often include the apples in their high-end lines or among regional products, where they are sold in 4-item cardboard trays,” said marketing manager Serena Pittella. With total production estimated at 2,000 tons for this season, the Italian association of producer organisations supplies the Melannurca Campana PGI apple almost exclusively to Italian supermarkets, with penetration of foreign markets very limited despite the fruit’s high quality and numerous merits.
