Smurfit Kappa’s ‘LCA Lite’ shows life cycle of packaging

As sustainability becomes a global concern, society and the business world are increasingly aware of how their activities impact the planet. This is a concern that particularly affects the packaging sector, as it is vital to know the carbon footprint of the packaging put on the market. This has led leading sustainable packaging company Smurfit Kappa to develop ‘LCA Lite’, a tool that helps customers make more informed decisions about the packaging they should use to transport and protect their products in a more efficient and sustainable way, based on the types of material with which they are made.

‘LCA Lite’ provides information on the life cycle of packaging to help companies have a more precise idea of the environmental impact that different materials can have. Thanks to this technology, Smurfit Kappa customers can obtain information to know, for example, what the greenhouse gas emissions of their packaging are.

Jesús Rivas, Business Development & Innovation Manager at Smurfit Kappa Spain, Portugal & Morocco, said: “Sustainability has always been part of our DNA. For this reason, we have set ambitious short- and long-term goals through our new ‘Better Planet 2050’ strategy, which measures our constant commitment to sustainability and focuses on the areas in which we believe we have the greatest impact. These include the design of increasingly sustainable packaging for our customers, replacing those elements of their current packaging that are not environmentally friendly with alternatives that are paper-based, the most sustainable material that currently exists for packaging, since it is renewable, recyclable and 100% biodegradable. In this context, our innovative ‘LCA Lite’ tool shows the impact of packaging after its useful life.”
