Walmart set to make further gains in US grocery market

Retail giant Amazon has not had the kind of success it been anticipating when entering the grocery business, with a new report by UBS showing that it holds less than 2% of a US grocery market dominated by Walmart and Kroger. The report further predicts that Walmart and Kroger will make gains in their market share in 2022, despite the influx of rapid grocery delivery startups.
Walmart had a market share of just over 25% in 2021, while Kroger was some way behind with slightly over 8%, according to Euromonitor data. This still dwarfed Amazon’s share (less than 2%), which included Whole Foods, with sales worth US$1.27 billion last year.
